Nothing is as constant as change itself. Yet all of us seem to be afraid or uneasy about it. Let Gene Anderson show you ways to not only accept change but to actually embrace it. He will show you how to lay out a plan to make the transition from "what was" to "what will be."
First, you have to understand the concepts of change and transition. Change is the tornado, the crinkled fender, the winning lottery ticket. Transition is getting to the ultimate acceptance of the new situation. Change is external; transition is internal. It's not the change that causes stress, it is the transition. The process of getting from the old to the new - the transition - is the focus of Gene's program. He'll lead you through the phases you encounter in negative resistance to change (something you didn't want) and positive resistance to change (change that you wanted). The steps are different for each, but once they are understood, change, inevitable change, also becomes acceptable.
Everyone changes, and in fact is eager to do so - so long as it's on his or her own terms of course! Children can't wait to get older, lovers can't wait to be married, students can't wait to graduate. Each requires transitional steps to make the change successful. Some changes are unwelcome - illness, accidents, natural disasters, plunging markets - situations beyond our control. Eisenhower said, “Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.” You undoubtedly studied Maslow’s priority of needs in a psychology class, but how about Herzberg? His two-factor model listed company policy, salary and supervision as job ‘dissatisfiers’ because they can result in Unhappy, but (surprise!) correcting them does not result in Happy. It only results in Not Unhappy. “Satisfiers’ are motivators, and they include achievement, recognition and the work itself. Fifty-plus years of motivational research have added a plethora of models to these early ones.
Gene Anderson has a passion for understanding why we do what we do, and in particular, the role of intrinsic motivation. This presentation focuses on workplace motivation, and as expected, it’s brimming with current data and plenty of humor.
